    What's the story

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of the most competitive exams for engineering graduates.

While GATE is conducted for admission to postgraduate courses in engineering/technology, GATE scores are used for recruiting candidates for PSU jobs. Candidates having a good GATE score can apply for jobs at top PSUs.

Here are some sought-after PSUs you can apply for with good GATE score.

    Details

GATE scores are generally used only for shortlisting candidates

Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India accept GATE scores to recruit candidates to various engineering-related posts.

PSUs generally shortlist candidates for recruitment on the basis of their GATE scores, following which they might be required to attend a few other rounds, including group discussion and personal interview, depending on the company's recruitment procedure. However, some PSUs also use GATE scores for direct recruitment.

    Factors

Various factors that affect GATE cut offs for PSU recruitment

While PSUs use GATE scores to shortlist candidates, the cutoffs for the same depend on a number of factors.

GATE cutoffs depend on factors like the number of vacant posts, number of applicants, GATE paper difficulty, applicant's category, number of candidates who appeared for the exam that year, etc.

Due to these factors, GATE cutoffs vary from PSU to PSU and change every year.

    Good score

Aspirants need good GATE scores as the competition is high

Over 60 PSUs accept GATE scores for recruitment, but most candidates prefer jobs in the largest PSUs, the Maharatna companies. Currently, there are eight Maharatna PSUs.

The Maharatna companies are the most sought-after by GATE candidates and as the competition is quite high, aspirants must have a good score in order to apply for jobs at these PSUs. Take a look at the Maharatnas.

    #1

NTPC and ONGC, two of the largest PSUs in India

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited, founded in 1975, is one of the biggest and most sought-after PSUs. The Maharatna company is engaged in electricity generation, distribution, oil & gas exploration, mining, and various other activities.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), established in 1956, is another Maharatna PSU engaged in exploration, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas.

    #2

SAIL and BHEL are among the most sought-after PSUs

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is another most sought-after PSU among GATE candidates. The steel-making Maharatna PSU, incorporated in 1973, traces its origin back to Hindustan Steel Limited founded in 1954.

Next on the list is Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a PSU founded in 1964. It is engaged in engineering and manufacturing electrical/power equipment in energy, infrastructure, and related sectors.

    #3

Indian Oil Corporation and Coal India Limited

The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is a leading state-owned oil and gas company. Indian Oil, which was established in 1959, is the country's largest commercial oil company. Its core businesses include refining, transportation, and marketing petroleum products.

Coal India Limited (CIL) is another preferred PSU among GATE candidates. The Maharatna company was established in 1975. It is the world's largest coal-producing company.

    #4

GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Petroleum

GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) are also among the most sought-after Maharatna PSUs.

GAIL is the country's largest state-run natural gas processing and distribution company. It's engaged in exploration, production, transmission, and marketing of natural gas/liquid hydrocarbon/LPG/petrochemical.

State-run BPCL is another oil and gas company mainly engaged in businesses like refining crude oil and production and marketing of petroleum products.
