Why 'Tumbbad' director won't return for sequel

    What's the story

The 2018 horror film Tumbbad has been re-released recently and has been performing well at the box office, having collected ₹12 crore so far.

The film's actor-producer, Sohum Shah, recently confirmed that a sequel is in development, with production set to begin in 2025.

However, Tumbbad director Rahi Anil Barve won't be a part of it.

    Barve's engagements

Barve is busy with other projects

Shah told Variety, "[Barve] has some fantastic work that he is creating and has a jam-packed schedule."

"I am super excited for the world to see his work and the stuff he'll give the audiences. Rahi's stamp, however, will always be on Tumbbad and its universe."

Adesh Prasad, who co-directed the original film, will helm the new installment.

    Challenges

Shah explains challenges in developing 'Tumbbad' sequel

Shah explained the difficulties they faced in developing the sequel, "A lot of people would keep telling me to make Tumbbad 2, but I was certain that if we don't crack the correct idea and story, we will not do justice to this universe."

Shah revealed that the sequel's script is ready and it took them six years to perfect it. He said, "We cracked the idea with massive difficulty to ensure it does justice to Tumbbad's world."

    Future plans

Shah envisions a broader universe for 'Tumbbad'

Looking ahead, Shah envisions a broader universe for Tumbbad.

He said, "We always had one vision in mind, even when we were making the first Tumbbad, the world of Tumbbad in itself is a franchise - it's not just about one film."

"I honestly want that we make various and different types of films of the Tumbbad universe - sequel prequel spin-offs reboots etc - the whole ecosystem."
