    What's the story

    About 16 people were rushed to hospital with injuries when a train failed to brake at the Richmond Station and hit a barrier.

    The injured included a driver and a guard.

    The mishap happened at 10am local time this morning (23:00 Sunday GMT).

    ABC News quoted a witness as saying passengers went "flying like Superman."

    Officials are probing why the train didn't stop.

    Richmond Station shut down, extra buses arranged

    Witnesses described chaotic blood-splattered scenes. There were conflicting reports about the train's speed: some said it was slowing down while others said it hit the barrier at full speed.

    Three suffered serious injuries including a broken leg and a fractured collarbone, but are stable.

    Post the accident, Richmond Station was shut down. Trains were running up to Clarendon.

    Extra buses have been deployed.

    New Waratah trains to keep running for now, officials say

    The train involved was a new Waratah train, but officials say till the cause of the apparent brake failure is determined, other Waratahs will keep running. They also denied reports that the train had derailed.
