    Steve Smith retires from ODI cricket: Decoding his stats

    What's the story

    Australian batter Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals.

    The decison came on Wednesday after he made his final appearance in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final defeat against India in Dubai on Tuesday.

    Notably, Smith top-scored for Australia with 73 in a losing cause.

    India reached the final at Australia's expense, chasing down their total of 264.

    A break down of Smith's ODI stats 

    In 170 ODIs, Smith scored 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28. He smashed 12 tons and 35 fifties.

    As per ESPNcricinfo, Smith scored 2,782 of his runs on home soil at 56.77 (100s: 9, 50s: 13).

    In 70 away matches (home of opposition), he smashed 1,944 runs at 32.94.

    Meanwhile, in 36 neutral venue matches, he amassed 1,074 runs at 41.30.

    Smith's ODI captaincy stats

    Smith led Australia in 64 ODIs. Recently, he was the stand-in skipper in the ODI series against Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy with Pat Cummins out with injury.

    Smith won 32 matches as captain (L28, NR4). Smith averages 43.65 with the bat as captain.

    He amassed 2,270 runs with the help of 5 tons and 14 fifties.

    On Tuesday, Smith posted the second-highest individual score by an Australian captain in Champions Trophy history. He is only behind the legendary Ricky Ponting, who hammered a brilliant 111*(115) against England in the 2009 Champions Trophy semi-final.

    Smith, will continue to be available for Test cricket and Twenty20 Internationals for Australia.

    "It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it," Smith said.

    "There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey."

    Right time to make way, adds Smith

    "Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way," he added.

    The veteran batter also said that Test cricket remains a priority for him as he still has a lot to contribute in the longest format.

    Smith won two ODI World Cups with the Aussies

    Smith won the 2015 ODI World Cup with Australia. He finished as his side's top scorer with 402 runs from 8 matches at 67.

    He smashed one century and 4 fifties (SR: 91.57).

    Thereafter, he won the 2023 ODI World Cup as Australia thumped India in the final.

    In 10 matches, he scored 302 runs at 33.55 (50s: 2).
