    What's the story

One of the most memorable clashes between India and New Zealand took place in the semifinal of the 2023 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

It was a high-scoring affair which saw India register a 70-run win.

Though the game witnessed three individual centuries, Mohammed Shami's stellar 7/57 headlined the game.

Here, we take you back in time to revisit the pacer's jaw-dropping spell.

    Shami's spell

Shami's stellar performance propels India to the finals

Defending 398, Shami's brilliance with the ball powered India.

He struck early, dismissing openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra within the powerplay.

However, an 181-run stand between Kane Williamson (69) and Daryl Mitchell (134) rescued the Kiwis.

Shami dismissed the former to break the partnership. In the same over, he removed Tom Latham (0) as the wicket of Mitchell helped Shami complete his fifer.

The pacer later removed tail-enders Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson.

Best figures for India in ODIs

Shami's brilliance meant NZ went from 220/2 to 327/10.

Earlier in the game, India were powered by centurions Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.

Meanwhile, Shami became the first Indian bowler to take seven wickets in an ODI innings.

Before this match, Binny held the best bowling figures for India in the format. He took 6/4 against Bangladesh in June 2014.

    Records

    Shami also broke these records

Shami recorded his fourth five-wicket haul in the ODI World Cup, the most in the tournament.

He broke a tie with Australia's Mitchell Starc, who owns three fifers.

Shami also became the first bowler to bag three five-fers in a single World Cup edition.

Earlier in the tourney, he took 5/54 against New Zealand in Dharamsala and 5/18 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

    Tournament figures

Shami finished as the highest wicket-taker

The veteran pacer displayed exceptional form throughout the 2023 World Cup.

Despite missing the initial matches, he made a powerful comeback.

Although India fell short in the final against Australia, Shami emerged as the tournament's highest wicket-taker, claiming 24 scalps in seven innings.

He registered three five-wicket hauls and one four-wicket haul, dismantling opposition lineups.

According to ESPNcricinfo, he averaged 10.70 (ER: 5.26).
