    What's the story

Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell is planning a comeback to the Test team, by participating in the impending Sheffield Shield.

His last appearance in Australia's Test squad was against Bangladesh in 2017.

He has only played seven red-ball international games and tallied 339 runs 26.07 ever since.

Notably, Maxwell is eyeing Australia's tour to Sri Lanka in January and February 2025 as his potential re-entry into Tests.

    Sheffield return

Maxwell to play in Sheffield Shield, confirms Sutherland

Victoria's captain, Will Sutherland, has confirmed that Maxwell will be playing in the Sheffield Shield matches.

This announcement comes after a hiatus since February 2023 when he last represented Victoria in the tournament.

"I think he'll be available for a couple and I believe he's keen to play as well," Sutherland said.

He also talked about having a player like Maxwell potentially join their side.

    Career challenges

Limited FC appearances due to injury, commitments

Maxwell, one of the cleanest strikers, is presently in England for the ODI series.

His participation in Shield matches for Victoria has been limited since February 2023.

In the past five years, he has featured in only two First-Class matches due to his white-ball commitments and a leg injury.

Despite these challenges, Maxwell remains committed to his goal of returning to Test cricket.

    Information

Maxwell has over 4,000 FC runs

Despite emerging as a potent limted-overs batter, Maxwell has fared well in First-Class cricket. The right-handed batter has racked up 4,147 runs from 69 matches at an average of 39.49 in the format so far. His tally includes seven tons and 24 half-centuries.
