    What's the story

Milind Rege, a veteran of Indian cricket, passed away aged 76 on February 19, 2025.

Rege who was a former Mumbai captain, was also a respected cricket administrator. He was an all-rounder during his playing days.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid tribute on social media, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sport.

    Here are further details.

    Legacy

Rege's cricketing career and administrative contributions

    A spin-bowling all-rounder, Rege played for Mumbai between 1966 and 1978.

He played 52 first-class matches, amassing 1,532 runs and claiming 126 wickets.

His career included three five-wicket hauls and eight half-centuries.

Meanwhile, after retirement, Rege stayed connected with Mumbai cricket, serving as a selector for the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in the 1980s.

He was made chairman of selectors in 2011 and reinstated in 2015 after a brief resignation.

    Tributes

Rege's health and tributes from cricketing legends

Rege, who celebrated his 76th birthday last Sunday, was admitted to the ICU of Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.

He passed away due to cardiac arrest and renal failure.

His death has left a void in the cricketing world with legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Ravi Shastri paying tribute to his contributions.

Tendulkar remembered Rege as a "true Mumbai cricketer" while Shastri described him as a "true champion."

    Enduring impact

Rege's lifelong association with cricket and MCA

Rege, a childhood friend of former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, played alongside him at the Dadar Union Sporting Club.

Throughout his career, he took on multiple roles and remained closely associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association as a cricket advisor.

Meanwhile, honoring his legacy, the Mumbai cricket team wore black armbands during their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Vidarbha in Nagpur.

MCA president Ajinkya Naik called Rege a "stalwart of Mumbai cricket," whose guidance shaped generations of cricketers.
