    What's the story

Shreyas Iyer opened up on his difficult journey over the last year, after his match-winning innings against New Zealand in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The Mumbai-based cricketer spoke about keeping self-belief alive despite being dropped from Tests and BCCI's central contract.

His return to international cricket during the ODI series against England earlier this year was a major comeback.

    Resilience

Iyer's journey: From domestic cricket to international comeback

Notably, Iyer was among the top run-scorers in the 2023 ODI World Cup but had to spend most of 2024 playing domestic cricket.

He had also expressed that he wasn't initially chosen for the XI during the ODI series against England.

Despite all of this, Iyer has shown remarkable resilience and determination throughout his journey back into international cricket.

    Information

    Iyer's sublime form in ODIs

Iyer has been in sublime form since returning to ODIs. He recorded scores of 78, 44, and 59 in the England ODI series before falling for 15 against Bangladesh in India's Champions Trophy opener. Iyer shone against Pakistan (56) and now New Zealand (79).

    Self-discovery

Iyer emphasizes self-reliance and confidence in personal growth

In an interview with Star Sports after his heroics against NZ, Iyer stressed on self-reliance and confidence in his growth.

He said, "It has definitely taught me a lot as a person... how to take responsibility on myself rather than depending on someone else."

He also spoke about how one has limited support in tough times, saying "No one is going to be there to help you in your tough times."

    Strategy

Iyer credits instinct and technique for success

Iyer credits his recent success to backing his instincts and honing a solid technique.

He said, "I keep saying that again and again... that's what has helped me in the last 1.5 years."

Additionally, he stressed the importance of living in the present and not thinking about the past, reiterating his commitment to evolving as a cricketer.

    Collaboration

Iyer reflects on crucial partnership with Axar Patel

Iyer also spoke about his crucial partnership with Axar Patel, after India was reduced to 30/3 in seven overs.

He lauded Patel's effort, saying "Axar I think played a brilliant knock to get those crucial 40 runs for the team."

The pair's near-century stand proved vital in India's 44-run win over New Zealand, and a place in the Champions Trophy semifinals against Australia.

    Summary

    India recorded a comprehensive win

Iyer's 79 and his 98-run stand with Axar indeed bolstered India's score. A run-a-ball 45 from Hardik Pandya then powered India to 249/9.

An incredible bowling display from spinners, especially Varun Chakravarthy, helped India win by 44 runs.

His fifer defied Kane Williamson's innings-defining 81. Notably, India will now meet Australia in the first semi-final on March 4.
