    India beat England in first home ODI since 2023 WC

    What's the story

    India claimed a four-wicket win over England in the 1st ODI at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur.

    Substantial knocks from Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel helped the Men in Blue chase down 249.

    Earlier, debutant Harshit Rana and Ravindra Jadeja disarrayed England with three wickets each.

    Notably, India featured in their first home ODI since the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

    England

    England bowled out despite solid start 

    Openers Philip Salt and Ben Duckett added an incredible 75-run stand after England elected to bat. They firmly dominated before an untimely run-out sent Salt back.

    Rana's twin dismissals brought England down to 77/3 in no time.

    However, half-centuries from Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell kept England afloat. Jofra Archer's late counter-attack powered England, who were tottering on 206/7, to 248.

    Bowlers

    Jadeja, Rana take three wickets apiece

    Jadeja was the pick of India's bowlers in the match. He took three wickets for 26 runs in nine overs (one maiden).

    Rana's ODI debut was marked by three wickets. However, he was a touch expensive with 53 runs in seven overs.

    The likes of Mohammed Shami, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav took a wicket each for India.

    Highest wicket-taker in India-England ODIs

    Jadeja set several records with his three-fer in Nagpur. He is now the leading wicket-taker in India-England ODIs.

    The Indian spinner broke James Anderson's record of 40 wickets in 31 matches against India.

    Jadeja now has 42 wickets from 27 ODIs at an average of 23.28 against England. His tally includes two four-wicket hauls.

    Jadeja attained this feat by getting Jacob Bethell out.

    Milestone

    600 international wickets for Jadeja

    Jadeja added another feather to his cap. He has become the fifth Indian to complete 600 wickets in international cricket (across all three formats).

    He has joined the likes of Anil Kumble (953), Ravichandran Ashwin (765), Harbhajan Singh (707), and Kapil Dev (687).

    Jadeja got to this feat after knocking over Adil Rashid in the 47th over.

    Buttler

    Buttler's highest ODI score in India 

    England suffered a top-order collapse after a spectacular start. However, a calculated half-century from skipper Buttler kept England in the hunt.

    Buttler, who added 59 runs with Bethell, raced to his 27th ODI fifty before getting dismissed by Axar. He scored a 67-ball 52 (4 fours).

    Buttler registered his highest score in India in ODIs. This was his maiden fifty in the nation.

    Bethell

    Youngest Englishman to score fifty in India 

    Bethell struggled to rotate the strike during in his partnership with Buttler. However, he took the onus once Buttler departed.

    Bethell eventually scored 51 off 64 balls, a knock laced with 3 fours and a six.

    He has become the youngest Englishman to score a half-century in India. At 21 years and 106 days, Bethell broke Joe Root's record from 2013, as per Cricbuzz.

    Duel

    Jadeja has dismissed Joe Root four times in ODIs

    Jadeja dismissed Joe Root in this match. Root was trapped leg before by the left-arm spinner in the 19th over of England's innings.

    Across 10 innings, Root has scored 115 runs from 133 balls bowled by Jadeja.

    Root has faced 63 dot balls in addition to hitting six fours and four sixes. Jadeja has dismissed Root on 4 occasions.

    Rana

    Rana shines with three wickets 

    Team India pacer Harshit Rana is having a dream season of international cricket. Days after shining on his T20I debut, though a controversial one, Rana celebrated his maiden ODI with three wickets.

    However, one of his overs in the powerplay went for 26 runs.

    As per Cricbuzz, Rana bowled the most expensive over by a debutant for India in ODIs.

    Gill, Iyer, and Axar power India to victory

    England seamers troubled Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal during India's run-chase. The Indian openers were sent back inside 20 runs.

    However, Iyer and Gill added a 94-run partnership. The former attacked with his incredible footwork while Gill rotated the strike.

    Iyer missed his ton, but Gill and Axar added a century-plus stand. Although India lost successive wickets, it was too late for England.

    Iyer slams his 19th ODI fifty

    Iyer came in at number four after India were down to 19/2. He denied England another breakthrough as they tested him with fierce bouncers.

    The Indian batter smacked two successive maximums off Archer.

    Iyer dominated England with his meticulous footwork thereafter. He smashed a counter-attacking 36-ball 59 (9 fours and 2 sixes) before falling to Jacob Bethell.

    Iyer slammed his 19th ODI fifty.

    Iyer attains these feats

    Iyer slammed his maiden ODI fifty against England. Before this innings, he had just 10 runs in two innings against them.

    The Indian batter now has 10 ODI half-centuries at home.

    Iyer raced to his half-century off 30 balls, his second-fastest in ODI cricket (balls faced). His fastest ODI fifty came against the West Indies in Vizag in 2019 (28 balls).

    Rohit

    Rohit Sharma dismissed cheaply

    Rohit was dismissed after scoring a mere two runs off seven deliveries. The early dismissal left India reeling at 19/2, after the loss of Jaiswal as well.

    Rohit was dismissed by Saqib Mahmood, after he tried an early flick shot which only managed to connect with the toe-end of his bat.

    The ball soared high and was caught by Liam Livingstone at mid-on.

    Gill

    Shubman Gill slams half-century in maiden ODI innings as vice-captain

    Gill, India's newly-appointed ODI vice-captain, slammed a fine half-century in the 1st ODI. He smashed 87 runs from 96 balls. He smashed 14 fours during his stay.

    Gill has raced to 14 half-centuries besides six tons. In 48 ODIs, Gill owns 2,415 runs at an incredible average of 58.90.

    Over 1,300 of his runs have come at home.

    3rd fifty for Axar

    Axar scored 52 runs from 47 balls. He slammed six fours and a six. This was his 3rd fifty in ODIs. Across 40 innings, he has smashed 620 runs at 20.66. This was his maiden fifty at home.

    As mentioned, India played their first ODI at home since the 2023 ODI World Cup final, which resulted in heartbreak for them. India played only three ODIs last year during their tour to Sri Lanka.
