    What's the story

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has progressed to the third round of the 2025 Australian Open.

    He defeated Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria in a hard-fought men's singles second-round match with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2.

The victory takes Djokovic one step closer to his possible 25th Grand Slam title.

Notably, Djokovic has now secured 150 Grand Slams after turning 30.

    Record

    Djokovic's journey and record-breaking appearance

Djokovic started his 2025 Australian Open campaign with a difficult match against American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy.

In the second-round clash, he met 21-year-old Faria who presented a different set of challenges.

Although the first set was one-sided in Djokovic's favor, thanks to his immense experience, Faria staged a comeback by winning the second through a tie-breaker.

Djokovic got back on track in the third set, breaking for 4-2, nullifying the threat of Faria.

He then closed out the match in the fourth set against the 125th ranked Faria.

After the win, an ecstatic Djokovic said he loves the court and competition, adding he thinks he responded well in the third and especially fourth set.

The Serbian ace will now face Czech Tomas Machac.

At the ongoing Australian Open, Djokovic could break a tie with Margaret Court for the most major titles by a man or woman (24).

Djokovic could also join Jimmy Connors (109) and Federer (102) as the only players to claim 100 men's singles ATP titles.

The Serb is also vying to become the oldest Australian Open champion.
