ACC announces inaugural Women's U-19 T20 Asia Cup
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has unveiled a new tournament, the Women's Under-19 T20 Asia Cup. This announcement follows the successful organization of the inaugural Women's U-19 T20 World Cup last year. The biennial event aims to provide Asian teams with a platform for preparation ahead of each edition of the ICC Women's U-19 World Cup. The news came to light during an executive board meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday.
Tournament aims to enhance global performance of Asian teams
The Women's U-19 T20 Asia Cup is designed to offer upcoming female cricketers in Asia an opportunity for international competition. The tournament will provide them with valuable experience and preparation, ultimately aiming to improve the performance of Asian teams on the world stage. The inaugural edition of this tournament is scheduled for mid-December 2024, leading into the U-19 T20 World Cup set to take place in Malaysia in January-February 2025.
ACC president hails tournament as 'monumental achievement'
ACC President Jay Shah described the introduction of the Women's U-19 Asia Cup as a "monumental achievement." He emphasized that it provides a platform for young women cricketers to develop their skills and showcase their talent. Shah also stated, "This initiative strengthens the future of women's cricket in Asia, and we are proud of the lasting impact these decisions will have, not only within our member nations but across the global cricketing community."
India's performance in previous U-19 Women's T20 World Cup
In the previous edition of the U-19 Women's T20 World Cup, India emerged victorious under Shafali Verma's leadership. Verma is currently preparing for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in UAE. Richa Ghosh, another key player from that multi-nation event, will also participate in this senior tournament. The next edition of the Women's U-19 T20 World Cup is scheduled from January 18 to February 2, 2024.
