    What's the story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advocated the development of open-source artificial intelligence (AI) systems and unbiased datasets.

His call came during his address at the AI Action Summit in Paris on February 11.

Co-chaired by India, the summit is a continuation of global discussions on AI governance after the UK's AI Safety Summit in 2023 and South Korea's AI Seoul Summit in 2024.

    Advocacy

PM Modi emphasizes trust and transparency in AI systems

PM Modi underscored the importance of trust and transparency in AI systems. He stressed on creating "people-centric applications" and democratizing technology.

He also noted how energy-intensive AI can be, hinting that green power could be a potential solution to this challenge.

This comes as India is committed to shaping global AI governance, currently co-chairing the AI Governance theme with France and Canada at the summit.

    Concerns

PM Modi addresses cybersecurity and job concerns related to AI

PM Modi urged global leaders to tackle issues of cybersecurity, disinformation, and deepfakes.

He also touched upon the debate of data localization, saying for technology to be effective and useful, it has to be rooted in local ecosystems.

Responding to fears of job loss due to AI advancements, he reassured that while the nature of work may change due to technology, new types of jobs will also emerge.

    AI progress

PM Modi highlights India's AI talent pool and initiatives

PM Modi emphasized India's enormous AI talent pool and its continuous work to create a country-specific large-language model (LLM).

The initiative was announced by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 30.

The Prime Minister also spoke about a unique public-private partnership model enabling pooling of resources such as compute power.

    Responsibility

PM Modi underscores human responsibility in shaping AI's future

In his concluding remarks at the summit, PM Modi highlighted how it is on us humans to shape the future of AI.

He said, "Some people worry about machines becoming superior in intelligence to humans. But no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny. Other than us humans."

With this, he stresseed how it is on us to use AI responsibly.
