    What's the story

The Indian government has announced plans to set up a Centre of Excellence in artificial intelligence (AI) for the education sector.

The initiative, announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget presentation for 2025-26, will be backed with an investment of ₹500 crore.

The move marks a major step toward integrating AI into teaching as well as learning processes.

    Impact forecast

AI center expected to revolutionize education sector

Jaideep Kewalramani, the COO and head of employability business at TeamLease Edtech, has praised the government's move.

He said, "The AI center of excellence for education is a strong signal for integrating AI for both the educators and learners."

Kewalramani added that this step could "unlock learning and raise the quality of education thereby improving employability."

    Tech integration

AI's growing influence in edtech sector

The announcement comes as edtech start-ups are increasingly leveraging AI.

Industry leaders believe that AI is transforming the edtech sector by enabling personalized learning, adaptive assessments, and automated content creation.

This new center of excellence is expected to further drive these advancements in the education sector.

    Ongoing initiatives

Government's continued commitment to AI research

The government's latest initiative comes after it announced three AI centers of excellence in 2023.

These centers were set up with a focus on agriculture, healthcare, and sustainability. The idea was to promote research and practical applications of AI in these sectors.

The new center for education marks the government's continued commitment to harnessing the potential of AI across sectors.
