    What's the story

Mobile World Congress (MWC), a pilgrimage for smartphone and gadget lovers, has grown to become the launch-pad for digital transformation as well.

Reportedly, this time technology themes like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G will take the center stage at MWC.

Exploring technology beyond smartphones, we today look at some of these next-generation networks and platforms that will make everything smart.

    The buzzword

    Artificial Intelligence

With stagnating revenues, telecom operators are looking to AI with a hope that the technology can make networks more efficient, open new revenue streams and reduce service costs, by having chatbots instead of human beings.

Then there is AI in smartphones, home speakers and cars, which will see a slew of updates and perhaps more novel applications of this platform at MWC 2018.

    In spotlight

    What about 5G?

With the recently concluded Winter Olympics in South Korea, we saw almost every carrier/manufacturer showcasing their 'homegrown' version of 5G technology.

At MWC, we expect Intel, Ericsson, Qualcomm and almost everyone else in the wireless ecosystem to talk about 5G.

With Qualcomm's recent announcement of 5G-ready chips, MWC may even witness the introduction of early 5G devices and real-life uses of the technology.

    Get connected

    Internet of Things

Further, around core themes such as connectivity, management, security and sensors that compute stuff to make everything smart, IoT will definitely take the center stage with a variety of new products on offer.

At this year's MWC, with 'connected intelligence' being an agenda, we can expect a heavy dose of applications that can manage sensors better and offer improved interoperability and integration using IoT.
