Next year, Microsoft could launch its foldable 'Andromeda' smartphone

    What's the story

After being quiet for a while, Microsoft seems ready to join the bandwagon of foldable smartphones.

The Redmond giant has not released a phone in months, but journalist Brad Sams has suggested it will be releasing a foldable smartphone by the end of next year.

Titled Andromeda, it will work as a hybrid transforming between tablet and smartphone modes.

    Here's all about it.

    Leak Peek

'Beneath a Surface' reveals Microsoft's hardware journey

In his book 'Beneath a Surface', Sams has described Microsoft's journey with Surface.

He has revealed how the company started with the first Surface products and transformed the line-up into a $1 billion per year business capable of taking on major players in the industry.

He also discussed what it holds for the future, revealing details about upcoming products, including the Andromeda device.

    Details

What we know about this phone?

We have heard rumors about this device, but not in a long time.

Many reports indicated the project has been canceled, but Sams book hints it is still in development and bigger than originally suggested.

It might come as a Surface-class device with dual-screen, perhaps like Samsung's device, and fold into half to become a smartphone and fold out to open as a tablet.

    Specifications

What are the specs, features of this device

There's hardly anything to say about the capabilities of this device, except for its size and folding mechanism.

Microsoft is said to be experimenting with ARM-based chips, but it is not clear if it will go with Qualcomm or Intel.

However, on the software front, reports have suggested the phone will probably run a full-fledged version of Windows instead of long-dead Windows phone OS.

    Information

Plans for Surface Book and Tablet

In the same book, Sams also talks about Microsoft's plans to launch a Surface Tablet with USB-C port, Surface laptops with AMD chips, and a new Xbox One console in 2019.
