    What's the story

In the wake of Hurricane Helene in the US, a cool feature on iPhones has become a lifesaver for those caught in the storm.

The satellite messaging capability, found on iPhone 14 and newer models running iOS 18, is being used by folks who are without cellular service.

Users are praising this feature for helping them stay in touch with family and rescuers during this tough time.

    User experience

    User testimonials prove feature's importance

Matt Van Swol, who lives in Asheville and heads subscription growth at Wyze, took to social media to share his experience with the satellite messaging feature.

He mentioned that due to the absence of cell network, everyone in Asheville using iOS 18 has been able to send and receive messages through this feature.

Another user backed up Van Swol's claims, saying they managed to stay connected even when they were stranded by fallen trees and power lines.

    Connectivity issues

    Communication challenges highlight feature's significance

The Federal Communications Commission reported that around 370 out of North Carolina's 1,452 cell sites were offline, due to power outages as of Monday.

This situation highlighted the importance of alternative communication methods like the satellite messaging feature.

However, not everyone was aware of this feature or had access to it, leading to communication difficulties for some during the hurricane.

    Information spread

Social media campaigns and official guidelines

As Helene made its way north, social media platforms like TikTok were flooded with how-to videos and calls to action, teaching folks how to activate the satellite messaging facility.

Apple's official site suggests using this feature for texting emergency services in urgent situations, instead of just letting family members know you're safe.

But hey, many people have found it super handy for keeping their loved ones in the loop during the hurricane.
