BJP, Congress feud over Janmashtami celebration order in MP schools

    What's the story

A directive from the Madhya Pradesh government, instructing schools and colleges to celebrate Janmashtami, has ignited a political dispute between the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Congress MLA Arif Masood questioned the intentions behind this decision, stating that educational institutions should only focus on academics.

"It is wrong to issue a government order to celebrate a religious event. When a holiday is declared on any day, then government events should not be held in...educational institutions," he said.

    Argument

Educational institutions are only for studies: Masood

"I am unable to understand why this government is engaged in ruining educational institutions? Educational institutions are only for studies and for a good atmosphere," Masood told ANI.

"There is a holiday for religious events, which Hindus and Muslims celebrate in whatever way they want. Recently, we celebrated Rakhi and we also attend many events of Janmashtami but you make it [Janmashtami] compulsory for educational institutions and on the other hand you point fingers at Madrasas. What do you want?"

    Rebuttal

CM defends decision citing cultural significance

Disagreeing with Masood's argument, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav highlighted Madhya Pradesh's deep-rooted connections with Lord Krishna and the cultural importance of Janmashtami.

He mentioned popular tourist spots like Narayan, Amjhera, and Janapav Dham that are linked to Krishna's life.

"Lord Krishna highlighted the importance of education 5,000 years ago. He came to Ujjain from Mathura to receive education. What could be a more auspicious time to celebrate his teachings?" he asked.

    Educational significance

CM emphasizes educational values in Krishna's teachings

"If we do not remember places associated with Lord Krishna on Janmashtami, then why remember Mathura? If Janmashtami is celebrated in Mathura, will the Congress stop visiting?" the CM added.

"This is nothing but disrespectful and nonsensical talk," he declared.

The Madhya Pradesh government issued the order to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami across the state on (Monday) August 26, suggesting that cleaning work at Lord Krishna temples and cultural programs be organized in each district.

    Objection

Congress insists on keeping education free from religious influence

The order also stated that lectures based on the context of Lord Krishna's education, friendship and life philosophy, and cultural programs should be organized in all government and non-government schools and colleges.

"Cultural programs should be organized on the occasion of Janmashtami at places in the state where special events have been associated with the life of Lord Krishna, such as Janapava (Dewas), Amjhera (Dhar), Narayana and Sandipani Ashram (Ujjain)," it added.
