    What's the story

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is reportedly considering nominating actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan for a Rajya Sabha seat.

The development comes after Tamil Nadu Minister PK Sekar Babu met Haasan at his residence on Wednesday.

Notably, Haasan's political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), had joined hands with the INDIA bloc for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

DMK is part of the INDIA bloc.

    Political alliance

Haasan's role in DMK's victory and Stalin's promise

During the election campaign, Haasan was instrumental in the DMK's victory, helping the party win all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu.

Reportedly, Chief Minister MK Stalin had promised Haasan a Rajya Sabha seat in return for his support.

This promise could be fulfilled soon as six Rajya Sabha seats are likely to fall vacant in June 2025.

MNM spokesperson confirms meeting, decision pending

MNM spokesperson Murali Appas confirmed the meeting between Sekar Babu and Haasan but did not reveal more details. He said Haasan is yet to take a call on the Upper House of Parliament candidacy.

"I can confirm that Minister PK Sekar Babu met Kamal Haasan today (Wednesday). But I cannot reveal what transpired between them," Appas told news agency IANS.
