'Indian 2' ends box-office run; fails to match ₹800cr legacy

Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian 2, which recently wrapped up its theatrical run, has managed to gross a total of ₹151cr worldwide.
Despite this seemingly impressive figure, the film's performance at the box office has been largely underwhelming.
The majority of its earnings were made in the first week of release, and it struggled to maintain momentum in the following weeks.
Helmed by S Shankar, the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian was released on July 12.

'Indian 2' earns ₹100.75cr domestically; ₹50.25cr overseas
Indian 2 managed to cross the ₹100 crore mark at the Indian box office, raking in a total of ₹100.75 crore domestically, according to Sacnilk.
The earnings were distributed across several regions, with Tamil Nadu contributing ₹54 crore, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana ₹25.5 crore, Karnataka ₹8.75 crore, Kerala ₹5.5 crore, and the Hindi Belt ₹7 crore.
Internationally, the film earned $6M (₹50.25 crore), reportedly.

'Indian 2' becomes Haasan's second-highest-grossing film
Despite its lackluster performance, Indian 2 has become Haasan's second-highest-grossing film to date. It has surpassed the actor's decade-old films Dasavatharam (2008) and Vishwaroopam (2013).
However, it fell short of director Shankar's 2007 release Sivaji in India, although it managed to gross marginally more than Sivaji worldwide.
Indian 2 is currently streaming on Netflix and has faced criticism since its premiere for its unrealistic and illogical storyline and action sequences.

'Indian 2' fails to match success of the original film
There's no denying that Indian 2 has been a major disappointment.
The original Indian film, released in 1996, grossed approximately ₹58 crore in India. Adjusted for inflation, this would amount to a staggering ₹800 crore today.
However, the sequel failed to live up to this legacy and has been deemed a colossal disaster at the box office.
A third installment, Indian 3, is scheduled for release next year.
