Decoding the relation between women's wellness and skin radiance

    What's the story

A glowing complexion is commonly associated with good health, but the link between a woman's well-being and her skin goes beyond mere skincare practices.

While genetics play a role, the skin condition is largely influenced by internal factors, including hormonal balance, nutritional status, and emotional well-being.

Dr. Mikki Singh, Dermatologist at Body Craft Clinic, Bengaluru shares some factors that influence women's skin.

    Hormonal changes

    Impact of hormonal changes

Women's hormonal cycles significantly impact their skin.

"Estrogen, the primary female hormone, enhances skin hydration by elevating hyaluronic acid levels and stimulates collagen production, imparting a plump, youthful appearance to the skin," says Singh.

"During different phases of life, such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can lead to various skin changes," she added.

    Nutrition

    Nutritional influence

According to Singh, a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can combat free radicals, reducing oxidative stress which is a key factor in aging and skin damage.

Essential fatty acids are crucial for maintaining the skin's lipid barrier, aiding in hydration and elasticity.

"A sugar-high diet and processed foods can exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions like acne and eczema," she explains.

    Stress

    Stress influences skin

Chronic stress can manifest on the skin in many forms, such as inflammation and premature aging. It can trigger or worsen skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, and acne.

"Stress hormones like cortisol can disrupt the skin's barrier function, leading to dehydration and sensitization. Additionally, stress can exacerbate hormonal imbalances, further impacting skin health," the expert says.

    Tips

A clinical intervention can be your first step

The first step in one's skincare journey should be to visit a dermatologist to understand their skin concerns, Singh suggests.

Further, a visit to a skin clinic will help you understand the right treatment for your concern.

Similarly, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help in monitoring hormonal health. There are a range of treatments for women experiencing hormonal imbalances.

    Diet and skincare

Incorporate a healthy diet and skincare

Singh recommends adopting a balanced diet abundant in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats to acquire vital nutrients crucial for skin health.

Maintain a personalized skincare routine suited to individual skin types and concerns. This entails gentle cleansing, ample hydration, sun protection, and utilizing products enriched with active ingredients.

Moreover, steering clear of smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and insufficient sleep is essential.
