    What's the story

President Droupadi Murmu has given the green light for the prosecution of former Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in a land-for-jobs case.

Following the approval, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a copy of this sanction with Delhi's Rouse Avenue court on Friday.

This case revolves around alleged appointments made within the railways during Yadav's tenure from 2004 to 2009, purportedly in exchange for land parcels gifted or transferred by recruits to his family or associates.

    Family involvement

Land transfers linked to Yadav's family

The land transfers were reportedly made in the names of Yadav's wife, Rabri Devi, and his two daughters, Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav.

In October 2022, the CBI filed a chargesheet naming 16 individuals, including members of Yadav's family.

The following year, the court summoned Yadav and others for questioning by the CBI.

    Final chargesheet

CBI files conclusive chargesheet against Yadav

In June, the CBI filed a final chargesheet against Yadav and 77 others in the land-for-jobs case.

This included 38 candidates who were allegedly appointed as substitutes in Group "D" posts across various railway zones during his tenure as Union minister of railways from 2004 to 2009 in exchange for financial benefits.

These benefits reportedly came in the form of land transfers to Yadav's family members.

    Money laundering

ED files supplementary chargesheet against Yadav

In August 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary chargesheet against Yadav, his son and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, and eight others.

This was in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to the land-for-jobs scam.

The Rouse Avenue court has scheduled a hearing on October 7.
