Kolkata doctor's rape-murder: Parents allege police tried to bribe them

    What's the story

The family members of the trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month, have alleged that the cops tried to suppress the case by cremating their daughter's body hurriedly.

The victim's father also alleged that the Kolkata Police tried to bribe them with money.

"The police, from the...beginning, tried to hush up the case...a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined," her father said.

    Public outcry

Parents join protests, demand justice for slain daughter

The parents made the statement while participating in—'Reclaim the Night'—protest at the hospital with other junior doctors.

They accused the police of trying to close the case without a thorough investigation and claimed that they were not allowed to see their daughter's body before it was taken for post-mortem examinations.

    Public backlash

Kolkata Police face criticism over handling of case

The Kolkata Police has faced severe criticism from both the opposition and citizens for their handling of this sensitive case.

Questions have been raised about how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, had unrestricted access to all areas of the state-run hospital at any time.

Reports suggest that he would illegally arrange hospital beds and other facilities for patients in exchange for money.

Amid public outrage, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the case be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

    Legal developments

CBI arrests former principal, new anti-rape bill passed

On Monday, the CBI arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh—the former principal of RG Kar Medical College—in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the hospital.

Student doctors have claimed that hospital authorities ignored their repeated demands for enhanced security measures inside the hospital.

In response to this incident and public outcry, the West Bengal Assembly passed an anti-rape bill this week seeking capital punishment for rape convicts if their actions result in the victim's death or leave her in a vegetative state.
