    NIRF Rankings 2019: IIT-Madras bags first rank in overall category

    What's the story

    President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday announced the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

    The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has bagged the first rank in the national ranking of higher institutes. Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and IIT-Delhi were ranked second and third in the list, respectively.

    Seven out of top 10 institutes are IITs

    Of the top 10 institutes on the MHRD's NIRF rankings list, seven are IITs. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi and the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi were ranked seventh and tenth on the list, respectively.

    Meanwhile, the Delhi University's Miranda House college topped the national ranking of colleges; and, the university's St. Stephen's College bagged the fourth place.

    AIIMS ranked the best medical sciences institute

    The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi was ranked the best among all the medical sciences institutes while the National Law School, Bangalore topped the national ranking for law colleges.

    Jamia Hamdard, Delhi bagged the first place in the 2019 NIRF rankings for the top pharmacy colleges. The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore was ranked the best among management institutes.

    Rankings released for institutes across 9 categories

    The MHRD released the NIRF rankings for higher educational institutes across nine categories - Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law. The first list based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was released in 2016.
