    What's the story

Durga Devi, mother-in-law of Sanjoy Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, has alleged that Roy physically abused his ex-wife.

Speaking to news agency ANI, she described the relationship between Roy and her daughter as tense, stating that Roy would hit her, which even led to a police complaint.

Devi also suggested that Roy could not have committed the crime against the 31-year-old trainee doctor alone and believes others may have been involved.

    History

Accused's violent past and potential accomplices

Talking about Roy and her daughter's marriage, Devi said, "Initially, everything was good for six months. When she was three months pregnant, he caused a miscarriage. He thrashed her, and a police complaint was registered for the same. Following this, my daughter continued being ill, I bore all her expenses for medicines."

"Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won't speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone...He can't do it alone," she added.

On Monday, Central Bureau of Investigation officials interrogated Roy as part of their ongoing investigation.

The same day, a local court granted the CBI permission to conduct a polygraph test on him. The date for this test is yet to be scheduled.

On Sunday, the CBI team conducted 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of the investigation.

Since August 12, doctors have been on an indefinite strike, suspending all elective and non-essential services including OPDs.

On August 9, a 31-year-old trainee doctor's body was discovered in semi-naked condition at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The police later confirmed that she was raped before being killed, leading to nationwide outrage and demands for improved safety measures within hospitals.

The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognizance of the case and is set to hear it on Tuesday.
