Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, had a history of marital misconduct, according to his neighbors.

Roy was married four times, with three of his wives leaving him due to his abusive behavior, India Today reported.

His fourth wife died of cancer last year.

Roy was arrested on Friday following a late-night interrogation.

A Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Roy had access to multiple departments of the medical college.

Autopsy report showed the victim had multiple injury marks suggesting violent assault.

"There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face and nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg...neck, in her right hand, ring finger and...lips," the report said.

    Legal proceedings

Roy has been charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of BNS.

He was remanded to police custody till August 23 by Sealdah court.

Reports also revealed that pornographic material was found on Roy's phone.

The victim, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, had gone to rest in the seminar room after her duty shift when the crime reportedly occurred.

    Family reaction

Accused's mother claims son confessed under police pressure

His mother, Malati Roy, has denied the allegations, claiming that he confessed to the crime under police pressure.

Locals told Millennium Post that Roy had been involved in questionable activities for years.

He allegedly scammed his childhood friend of ₹2,20,000 while offering him a job in the Kolkata Police. Roy extorted the money in installments while posing as an employee of the Kolkata Armed Police's Fourth Battalion Group.

However, it was later discovered that Roy was a civic volunteer.
