Delhi's Signature Bridge turns deadly: Three deaths in two days

    What's the story

The Signature Bridge in Delhi, which took 14 years to be completed, is in news for all the wrong reasons.

In the last two days, three people have died on the bridge, which was advertised as 'engineering marvel'.

On Saturday, a motorcyclist died after his vehicle skidded, less than 24 hours after two medical students were killed after their bike rammed into a divider.

    What happened

Deceased was driving the bike, hit a divider

The deceased was identified as 24-year-old Shankar, a native of Bihar. He was driving the bike and his 17-year-old cousin Deepak was riding pillion.

After hitting a road divider, the motorbike skidded. While Deepak suffered knee injuries, Shankar died on the way to the hospital.

Both of them were wearing helmets and Deepak said his cousin's helmet flew off after the accident.

    Looking back

Earlier, two medical students lost their lives on the bridge

Before Saturday's incident, two medical students, named Satya Vijay Shankaran and Chandrashekhar, died at the bridge on Friday.

Police said the duo was driving a KTM Duke Bike at high speed.

"When they took the left turn, the bike lost its balance and hit the divider. With the impact of the collision, the two fell off from the bridge," DCP AK Thakur said.

    Information

Students were neither clicking selfies nor performing stunts

It was earlier reported the students were taking selfies which cost their lives, but the police ruled it out. They were not performing stunts either, as speculated earlier. "Being a left turn, the possibility of the victims performing stunts has been ruled out," Thakur said.

    Details

Earlier, this month, Delhi got the iconic bridge

The Signature Bridge is built over Yamuna river in Northwest Delhi to reduce travel time between North and Northeast Delhi. The 575-meter-long suspension bridge is one of the costliest projects of Delhi government.

The bridge was inaugurated, earlier this month, amid a lot of political hoopla with BJP MP Manoj Tiwari alleging he was pushed by AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, a charge he denied.
