    What's the story

At least three people were killed and over 20 injured in violent clashes between two villages, Hunphun and Hungpung, over a land dispute in Ukhrul district, Manipur, on Wednesday.

The clash broke out during a cleanliness drive organized by the Thawaijao Hungpung Young Students's Organisation (THYSO) as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan program.

Tensions escalated when Hunphun village reportedly opposed the event, claiming the area as part of their jurisdiction.

This led to a violent confrontation, including gunfire exchanges.

A 6th Manipur Rifles personnel from nearby village, who was on duty, was among the victims.

State police and Assam Rifles were immediately deployed to restore order as news of the clash spread.

Additionally, Ukhrul Sub-Divisional Magistrate invoked emergency powers under Section 163 of the BNSS.

Under this section, assembly of five or more unauthorized persons, carrying of firearms, banners, placards, lathis etc., is prohibited.

    Measures taken

Security forces deployed, internet services suspended

The state government also temporarily suspended internet services in Ukhrul district for one day starting at 1:20pm due to concerns about potential misuse of social media platforms.

The Manipur Police, meanwhile, have issued a high alert message to all district police heads due to the "present law and order situation."

"All officers, police stations, outposts, nakas etc should remain on high alert," the message read.
