    What's the story

Director Vivek Agnihotri has criticized censorship rules amid the controversy surrounding Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film Emergency.

The film's release has been delayed due to certification issues, with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) yet to approve it.

Agnihotri shared his views on censorship on X (formerly Twitter), which were subsequently echoed by Ranaut on social media.

    Censorship criticism

    Agnihotri criticizes censorship; suggests alternatives

Agnihotri took to X on Wednesday morning and wrote, "CENSORSHIP: No creative expression should ever be censored—that's my personal view."

"But if you still insist on censorship, why not start with TV debates, news programs, political speeches, and religious sermons? These are often the real sources of fake news, division, hate, and violence."

    Statement

'Cowards only censor what exposes their ugly face'

Agnihotri further said, "If you feel it maligns you or hurts your sentiments, then you should develop some spine to take that criticism. If it doesn't present your side, create something that presents your case. After all, cowards only censor what exposes their ugly face."

Ranaut promptly agreed with his statement and shared his tweet on her Instagram Story.

    'Emergency'

The controversy surrounding 'Emergency' rages on

Ranaut's Emergency has been delayed from its September 6 release slot due to certification issues.

The film has drawn criticism from the Sikh community, who have demanded that certain scenes be removed, including those depicting former PM Indira Gandhi's assassination and the Punjab riots.

Bombay High Court will hear the producers' plea in the matter on Wednesday.

Ranaut plays Gandhi in this drama co-starring Anupam Kher and Shreyas Talpade.

    Ranaut has also directed it.
