Box office: 'Fall Guy' falters on opening day in India

    What's the story

Despite high expectations, the Hollywood film The Fall Guy—directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt—has had a disappointing start at the box office.

The film's initial earnings have been underwhelming, not just in India but globally as well.

Based on past trends, it is projected that the movie's final total may hover around or below ₹5cr in India.

Here's a breakdown of collections for day 1.

    Context

    Why does this story matter?

Gosling's previous film, Greta Gerwig's Barbie, garnered significant interest from audiences and achieved remarkable success at the box office.

It raked in ₹5cr on its opening day in India and ultimately amassed ₹43.80cr during its theatrical run.

Globally, it soared past the $1.4B mark.

However, the prospects for Gosling's current project seem less certain.

Meanwhile, Blunt's acclaimed performance in the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer has set high expectations for this film.

    Revenue projections

Indian, North American box office performance

Per Sacnilk, the film grossed ₹50 lakh on its opening day in India, with an overall English occupancy of 13.05%.

Meanwhile, in North America, The Fall Guy managed to earn $3.15M from Thursday premieres, including $800K from early access screenings on Wednesday, along with ticket sales from 3,200 locations on Thursday.

It is estimated to gross $25M over the weekend.

    Upcoming challenges

'The Fall Guy' faces stiff competition and high expectations

The Fall Guy is contending with formidable competition from Zendaya's Challengers and will continue to face challenges from other major releases in the upcoming weeks, including Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Given its substantial production budget of a reported $125M, the film needs to generate a gross of $275M or more to be considered a successful theatrical venture.

Achieving a worldwide gross of $150M seems like a daunting task given its current performance.

    Plot

'The Fall Guy': Know the plot, character detail

This action-packed comedy—written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3)—takes inspiration from a 1980s TV show about stunt people.

Gosling plays a veteran stuntman working with his crush (Blunt) on her directorial debut.

When their leading actor (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) becomes embroiled in a mystery, the lines between movie magic and real danger blur.

The film also boasts a stellar cast including Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke, and even holds a Guinness Record for the most car stunts!
