    What's the story

The first-ever National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) wrapped up recently after a successful run across seven Australian cities between February 13 and March 2.

The festival, aiming to strengthen Australian-Indian film links, showcased a diverse range of Indian cinema and attracted audiences beyond the Indian diaspora.

One of the biggest highlights of the event was Superboys of Malegaon winning Best Film.

    Award winners

'Superboys of Malegaon' won Best Film at NIFFA

Reema Kagti's Superboys of Malegaon was awarded the Best Film at NIFFA.

The winners were revealed by the festival's all-woman Nomination Council, with other prominent awardees being Anuj Gulati's Wing Man (The Universal Irony of Love) for Best Indie Feature Film, Goutam Ghose's Parikrama for Best International Indian Film, and Badrappa Gajula's Maa Oori Ramayanam for Best Documentary Feature.

The event wrapped with a Red Carpet Gala and screening of Roam Rome Mein in Perth.

    Collaborations and recognitions

    NIFFA's partnerships and additional awards

NIFFA's success is partly due to its association with institutions like Murdoch University and Dendy Cinemas.

The festival's founder, Anupam Sharma, highlighted NIFFA's vision to strengthen film ties and bring Indian cinema to regional Australia.

The Last Show won Best Short Film, The Garmentologist won Best Short Film - Special Mention, and Raja Chatterjee's Misty won the Post-production Completion Grant.

    Expansion plans

NIFFA Regional launched for wider reach of Indian cinema

In a bid to widen its reach, NIFFA Regional was launched with encore screenings scheduled at Dendy Cinemas.

This is part of the festival's continuous celebrations and attempts to bring Indian cinema to a wider audience in Australia.

With these plans, NIFFA's impact on Australian-Indian film links is only going to grow.

Meanwhile, Adarsh Gourav-led Superboys of Malegaon is currently running in Indian theaters.
