The Bahubali Effect - South re-releases look to strike gold

    What's the story

Only two weeks after release, the Hindi version of 'Bahubali: The Conclusion' emerged as the highest grosser of all-time, surpassing Aamir Khan's 'Dangal'.

Following the mammoth success of Bahubali, other South Indian films are trying to follow suit and replicate its success.

Kadamban is one such film, which is now considering a re-release in Hindi despite a not-so-spectacular business in Tamil.

    All-India Appeal

    Kadamban's subject doesn't carry all-India appeal

With Aryan and Catherine Tresa in the lead, Kadamban tells the story of tribal inhabitants trying to save their forest from a businessman; it was released on 14 Apr'17.

The subject wasn't reportedly appealing even to the Tamil audience; its business was average.

Critics say the subject doesn't carry an all-India appeal.

Still, Kadamban managed to attract buyers willing to release the Hindi version.

    Epic Action Flick

Biggest Tamil action film of the year

Neither Aryan nor Catherine is a known face, but those backing Kadamban feel even Prabhas wasn't a known face before Bahubali.

It is tagged as an 'Epic Action Flick' and the 'Biggest Tamil Action Film of the year'.

The Hindi version is slated to release on 16 Jun'17; it would be interesting to see if it manages to replicate the Bahubali phenomenon.

    Urumi

Vidya Balan's Malayalam film to be re-released

2011 Malayalam hit 'Urumi' is being dubbed in Hindi to be re-released across India as 'Ek Yoddha Shoorveer'.

Following Bahubali's success, the makers realized audiences are open to period sagas.

Urumi stars Malayalam star Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva, Genelia D'Souza; Tabu and Vidya Balan make special appearances.

It is set in the early 16th century when the Portuguese invaded the Indian shores.

    Information

    Anushka and Rana's Rudhramadevi

Many South blockbusters had hoped to achieve success in the Hindi cinema industry but failed miserably. One such film was the Hindi version of 2015 Telugu flick Rudhramadevi. It even starred Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati but tanked without making any mark.

    Flop Shows

South biggies that flopped in Hindi

2006 Tamil blockbuster Anniyan: Hindi-dubbed version 'Aparichit' released in 2007 was a box-office failure.

2008 Tamil flick Dasavathaaram: Hindi version 'Dashavtar' released in 2009 was declared a flop.

2010 Telugu super-hit Leader featuring Rana: The dubbed Hindi version received a lukewarm response.

2012 Telugu highest-grosser Eega by SS Rajamouli: Hindi-dubbed version 'Makkhi' was poorly received despite being critically acclaimed.

    Information

    Bahubali 1 - The biggest re-release ever

The Hindi version of 'Bahubali: The Beginning' performed exceptionally well during its initial release in 2015. The makers of the film re-released it in 1000 screens on 7 April. But this time around, it couldn't attract audiences and the collections were pretty disappointing.

    Commercial Successes

South blockbusters that performed well at the Hindi box office

The Hindi version of Mani Ratnam's 1992 film Roja emerged a commercial success.

The Hindi re-release of the 1995 flick Bombay earned Rs. 140 million, performing exceptionally well for a dubbed film.

Rajinikanth's 1995 blockbuster Baasha performed well in Hindi when re-released in 2012.

Kamal Haasan's 2013 thriller Vishwaroopam was released as Vishwaroop in Hindi, which earned Rs. 115 million in the first week.
