Toy Story 4: Critics call it 'Heartwarming, funny, beautifully animated'

    What's the story

The first film in the Toy Story series revolutionized animated films.

Toy Story 2 was equally good, if not better, and the third one was a spectacular film as well.

The early reviews for the fourth Toy Story iteration are in and the film seems to have carried the legacy forward.

Here is a roundup of what critics around the world thought about it.

    Cast

A continuation of the series featuring an ensemble cast

Toy Story 4 continues the series and the 'toys' now belong to Bonnie Anderson. The film introduces a new character Forky, a Spork, and features a road trip adventure.

Directed by debutant Josh Cooley, it stars some of the best actors in the business including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Keanu Reeves, and Christina Hendricks.

    Ratings

The film is rated 100% on Rotten Tomatoes!

Metacritic gave it 83 out of 100 with a 'must-see' badge. Critics Consensus for the film reads, "Heart-warming, funny, and beautifully animated, Toy Story 4 manages the unlikely feat of extending, and perhaps concluding, a practically perfect animated saga."

CNN's Brian Lowry called it a "cinematic grand slam that's wholly equal to the high expectations raised by the terrific trio that it follows."

    Flawless Animation

Everyone has praised its wonderful animation

Peter Deburge from Variety called the film the series' conclusion, saying, "Toy Story ushered in the era of computer-animated cartoon features, and the fourth movie wraps up the saga beautifully. At least, for now."

Vox's review read, "Toy Story 4 is easily the series' best-looking entry yet, playing with new, radioactive color palettes...Pixar makes life in plastic look fantastic and almost tangible."

    Receiving Praise

The film has received laudatory reviews everywhere

As per The Hollywood Reporter, "It's been nearly a decade since Toy Story 3 put a satisfying capper on what seemed likely to remain a trilogy, but [this film is] yet another fully worthy sibling."

"Toy Story 4 is a blast...Let this be a lesson to all franchise cynics: Sometimes more is actually good." says the review by Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press.

    Negative Reviews

Some critics, however, weren't quite pleased by 'Toy Story 4'

EW wrote, "Toy Story 4 is an unnecessary franchise extension savvy enough for self-criticism: What is Woody still doing here?"

Verge said "With this third sequel to Toy Story, Pixar has gotten away with pushing its own expiration date on the series. But those tiny spork tines won't hold it together much longer. It's time to get lost."

The film releases on June 21.
