Mammootty supports Hema Committee report, claims 'no powerhouse in cinema'

    What's the story

Malayalam superstar Mammootty has voiced his support for the recommendations made by the Justice Hema Committee, which investigated allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation in the Malayalam film industry.

The actor took to social media on Sunday to share his views and said that he "wholeheartedly welcomes and supports" the committee's suggestions.

He also explained why he had not previously commented on the issue.

    Details

    'Let the police investigate honestly'

In his post, Mammootty wrote, "I wholeheartedly welcome and support the recommendations and solutions said in the Hema Committee report. It is time for all associations in the film industry to join hands and implement them."

He added, "On the complaints that have been raised now police investigation is progressing. The full version of the Justice Hema Committee report is before the court. Let the police investigate honestly. Let the court decide the punishments."

    Statement

    'No powerhouses in cinema'

Mammootty further stated, "There is no 'powerhouse' in cinema. The practical recommendations of the Hema Committee report must be enacted if there are legal hurdles. Ultimately, cinema must survive."

Explaining the delay in his response, Mammootty said that he believed the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) and its leadership should be the first to react.

"I believe that I should give my opinion as a member only after their responses, that is why I waited this long."

    Report

Hema Committee report exposes Mollywood's dark underbelly

The Justice Hema Committee report, made public earlier this month, revealed shocking accounts of sexual harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment of women in the Malayalam film industry.

The 235-page document, which redacted the names of witnesses and accused individuals, stated that the entire industry is controlled by a small group of male producers, directors, and actors who exert significant influence over its operations.

    Aftermath

Several big names face action after report's release

Following the release of the report, several prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry, including actors Jayasurya and Mukesh, have faced legal action.

Superstar Mohanlal also stepped down from his role as the president of AMMA.

The revelations in the report have sent shockwaves through the industry and sparked widespread discussions about the need for systemic change and accountability.
