Kajol won't watch her horror film 'Maa,' reveals film's writer

    What's the story

In December 2023, it was revealed that Kajol would be charting new territories with the horror film Maa, directed by Vishal Furia.

The script, written by Saiwyn Quadras, marks a new chapter in Kajol's diverse Bollywood career spanning over three decades.

The idea for Maa was conceived during the production of sports drama Maidaan when Ajay Devgn, Kajol's husband and fellow actor, expressed interest in a supernatural narrative for her.

    Concept

Kajol has no plans of watching the movie

Quadras told Mid-Day, "Maa is a purely original horror fare, with a heavy dose of emotions that you wouldn't expect in a supernatural film. After he liked the concept, he asked me to make Kajol ma'am listen to it. She loved it."

"It's the first time that Kajol ma'am is working on a supernatural emotional drama. She keeps saying that she might not watch Maa as horror films scare her."

    Production

Kajol's portrayal of a Bengali mother praised by Quadras

The production of Maa began in Mumbai in late February before moving to various locations in West Bengal in March.

As Furia oversees the next phase of filming back in Mumbai, Quadras praised Kajol's portrayal of a Bengali mother.

"If there is an emotionally intense scene, she [is fully in that moment]. The gravitas she brings to the mother's role is fantastic."

    Recognition

Writers deserve to be acknowledged, says Quadras

Reflecting on his previous project Maidaan, Quadras expressed gratitude for being associated with the Amit Ravindernath Sharma directorial.

"While the expectations from the film were high, the emotional resonance has been rewarding. As writers, we need to be mentioned when films are announced like Amit R Sharma and Boney Kapoor did during Maidaan's trailer launch."

"Ajay too announced my name when they launched Maa. Few filmmakers are secure enough to do that."

    About the film

Here is what we know about the upcoming movie

Earlier, a source told Peeping Moon, "Horror is a genre [Kajol] has never explored and one she has been wanting to try her hand at."

"So when [Furia] approached her with this gripping script set in a very unusual world, she instantly embraced it. It's a world we have never seen Kajol in before, and she is madly excited to embark on this new thrilling journey," they added.

Furia is best known for directing Chhorii.
