'Laila Majnu' re-release surpasses original box office collection
The 2018 romantic drama, Laila Majnu, directed by Sajid Ali and starring Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary, has found renewed success at the box office. The film, produced by Imtiaz Ali, was re-released in cinemas last Friday and has already surpassed its original box office collection by Monday, according to a report by Pinkvilla.
Re-release daily earning touched ₹1cr on Sunday
In its original 2018 theatrical run, Laila Majnu had earned only ₹2.18 crore. However, upon its re-release, it opened to a promising ₹30 lakh on Friday, boosted by low ticket prices due to National Cinema Lovers Day and lack of competition from new Bollywood releases. The film's earnings increased over the weekend with ₹75 lakh on Saturday and hitting the ₹1 crore mark on Sunday.
'Laila Majnu' continues successful run
The film continued its successful run into the week, earning more than its opening day with ₹60 lakh on Monday. This brought the total collection of the re-released film to ₹2.65 crore, significantly surpassing its original theatrical earnings. This isn't the first time an Imtiaz Ali film has performed well after re-release; his 2011 musical Rockstar has been maintaining a strong presence for weeks now and his 2009 directorial Love Aaj Kal is also currently playing in cinemas.
'Laila Majnu' gained cult following after streaming release
Laila Majnu gained a cult following after its streaming release on ZEE5 in 2018. Its lead actors - Dimri and Tiwary - have since emerged as bankable streaming stars with successful projects like Bulbbul, Qala, and Khakee: The Bihar Chapter. They have also scored recent box office hits with films like Animal, Bad Newz and Madgaon Express respectively.
'Laila Majnu': A modern-day adaptation of classic folklore

It was produced by Ali's former wife Preety and Ektaa Kapoor and shot predominantly in Jammu and Kashmir. The film's music, composed by Niladri Kumar, Joi Barua, and Alif, has become increasingly popular over time.
