    What's the story

On the eve of India's 78th Independence Day, actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut unveiled the trailer for her much-awaited film Emergency.

The movie, which features Ranaut in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is scheduled for a worldwide release on September 6.

The film's narrative delves into Gandhi's political and personal life, with a special focus on the controversial Emergency period (1975-1977).

    Here's a trailer breakdown.

    Trailer details

'Emergency' trailer: A peek into Gandhi's life

The Emergency trailer, which spans almost three minutes, offers a glimpse into the "darkest times of democratic India," as described by the film.

It features a young Gandhi's relationship with her father and former Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

The film also explores Gandhi's handling of wars and political unrest during her tenure.

The star-studded cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and Milind Soman alongside Ranaut.

    Director's take

Ranaut compares Gandhi's life to a Shakespearean tragedy

Ranaut, who has also donned the director's hat for her forthcoming film, recently drew parallels between Gandhi's life and a Shakespearean tragedy in an interview with Variety.

She said, "Her life was such a Shakespearean tragedy. It's not for us to judge or evaluate. It is what it is."

She added that the film presents an honest perspective on the Emergency, its causes, and its aftermath.

    Release details

'Emergency' release delayed due to Ranaut's election campaign

The release of Emergency—initially set for June—was delayed due to Ranaut's involvement in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

Following her victory, she announced the new release date along with a film poster.

The movie is co-produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films under the banners Manikarnika Films and EaseMyTrip.

The screenplay and dialogues are penned by Ritesh Shah, with music composed by Sanchit Balhara.
