With this in mind, they had announced a prequel to the show. Now they seem to have found a star to cast.

The yet unnamed prequel is set thousands of years before the events of Westeros unfolded in 'Game of Thrones'.
It would show the transition from the Golden Age of Heroes to the darkest hour, presumably, the creation of White Walkers.
The story will delve into the mysteries of the east, something only hinted at in the current show, and explore the legendary Starks.

Watts, whose character name has not been revealed, will be playing the role of a charismatic socialite who hides a dark secret.
For those familiar with 'Game of Thrones', this role description could fit most people in King's Landing.
Notably, Watts has appeared in acclaimed films like 'Mulholland Drive', 'Birdman', and on television in the recent revival of David Lynch's celebrated 'Twin Peaks'.

The brains behind the prequel
The prequel is being spearheaded by Jane Goldman, who has films like 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' to her name, and the author of 'A Song of Ice and Fire' George RR Martin.
Goldman is the showrunner and the executive producers include the current GoT producer, Vince Gerardis.
Jim Danger Gray and Daniel Zelman, who co-created 'Damages and Bloodline', are on board for this project.

Casey Bloys, HBO's programming president also said that no GoT related show, even if greenlit, would air 'until at least a year after the final season'. Thus the prequel can be expected in 2020, as GoT's final season airs during the first half of 2019.
