    What's the story

Catherine O'Hara, the acclaimed Canadian actor, recently expressed her surprise at a particular scene in the newly released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

The scene features O'Hara's character, Delia Deetz, showcasing her art in an audio-visual format and has a striking resemblance to a plotline from Schitt's Creek.

While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is currently in theaters, Schitt's Creek is streaming on Netflix.

    Character evolution

O'Hara's character transition and striking resemblance

In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, O'Hara's character Deetz has transitioned from a sculptor to an audio-visual artist.

The film opens with a scene set in her art gallery where she informs her stepdaughter Lydia (played by Winona Ryder) about a character's demise.

A particular installation features Deetz in a white outfit, flapping her arms like wings against a backdrop of flying crows.

This imagery closely mirrors The Crows Have Eyes, a film within the series Schitt's Creek starring O'Hara as Moira Rose.

    Actor's insight

O'Hara's reflections on the 'crow-flapping' scene

In a discussion with Entertainment Weekly, O'Hara shared her thoughts on filming the crow-flapping scene.

She revealed that director Tim Burton had initially planned to use different birds but eventually settled on crows.

"Then Tim said, 'Do you want to flap your arms?' And I did. But I thought, Did Tim ever see Schitt's Creek? I have a feeling he didn't," she stated.

    Director's knowledge

O'Hara's uncertainty about Burton's familiarity with 'Schitt's Creek'

O'Hara expressed uncertainty about whether Burton was familiar with Schitt's Creek or the crow-flapping scene.

"I really have no idea whether Tim's ever seen Schitt's Creek or knows any crow thing," she said.

"Isn't it weird?! It's weird that I am flapping my arms, and there are crows."

Despite her doubts, O'Hara chose not to question Burton about his knowledge of the show as she felt it might come across as ego-driven.

    Character comparison

Ryder and O'Hara discussed similarities between their characters

Ryder noted the similarities between Deetz and Rose, describing both as artists and sensitives.

O'Hara agreed, adding that "Nobody understands how much they have to offer in every kind of creativity, in every creative endeavor. They are so multi-talented, and no one seems to get it."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a sequel to Beetlejuice and stars Jenna Ortega and Michael Keaton, among others.
