    What's the story

Twitter's Public Policy Director for India and South Asia, Mahima Kaul, resigned from her post in January citing personal reasons, a senior official confirmed on Sunday.

She has decided to resign from the position in the company to take some time off.

Kaul, who had joined Twitter in 2015, will continue in her role till the end of March and will support the transition.

    Statement

'Loss for all of us at Twitter'

Twitter Public Policy Vice President Monique Meche said, "At the start of this year, Mahima Kaul decided to step down from her role...to take a well-deserved break."

Meche said, "It's a loss for all of us at Twitter, but after more than five years in the role we respect her desire to focus on the most important people and relationships in her personal life."

Unrelated to recent friction between Twitter, Indian government: Report

The development comes at a time when Twitter has been under the Indian government's scanner for violations of the law.

The government has said that Twitter violated Indian law for not taking down tweets talking about the "farmers' genocide."

Sources confirmed to India Today that Kaul's resignation is unrelated to the recent friction between India and the microblogging website.

    Context

Twitter under fire for unblocking tweets over farmers' protest

Last week, India had sent a strongly-worded letter to Twitter for "unilaterally" deciding to unblock around 250 accounts that the government said were using an objectionable hashtag over the ongoing farmers' protest.

Twitter, on the other hand, said that it had temporarily withheld the accounts while it reviewed the situation and later unblocked them as it felt they constituted "free speech" and were "newsworthy."
