    What's the story

Greeting people on the occasion of Diwali, US President Donald Trump said the festival of lights is a special opportunity to reflect on the bond of friendship between India and US.

In his special Diwali message posted online, Trump also recognized the "extraordinary" contributions of Indian-Americans in the development of the US.

He also extended Diwali wishes on behalf of his wife, Melania.

    Message

Lighting of lamps symbolizes true meaning of Diwali: Trump

Speaking about the contributions of Indian-Americans, Trump said, "Their achievements in business, public service, education, and other fields continue to represent the very best of our American virtues."

Asserting that Diwali is a spiritual-time marked by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, he said lighting of lamps symbolizes the true meaning of Diwali, which is the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

    Greetings

'We will continue to honor the traditions of diverse communities'

Top American lawmakers, like Republican National Committee (RNC) chairperson Ronna McDanie and Mark Warner, senior United States Senator from Virginia, also sent their Diwali greetings.

"We wish you and your family and friends a meaningful celebration of the victory of light over darkness. We at the RNC will continue to honor the traditions of diverse communities that enrich and strengthen our country," Ronna said.
