    What's the story

A Russian missile attack on a hotel in Kryvy Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has left four people dead and 31 others injured.

Dnipropetrovsk region governor Sergiy Lysak confirmed the attack and offered his "sincere condolences to the relatives" of the deceased.

The attack also inflicted widespread damage on local infrastructure including residential buildings and shops.

Fourteen apartment buildings, a post office, nearly two dozen cars, a cultural institution and 12 shops were affected by the attack.

Fourteen of the victims are in serious condition, while the wounded have been hospitalized, Lysak added.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service stated that there could be more victims beneath the rubble.

In another incident further north in Sumy, a security guard lost his life when a warehouse was hit during this ongoing conflict.

    City profile

Kryvy Rih's strategic location and population impact

Kryvy Rih is strategically located around 70km (69km) northwest of the front line. The city had a population of over 600,000 before the war started.

The strike occurred as European leaders prepare to adopt aggressive measures to increase defense expenditure and pledge support for Ukraine on Thursday at a conference in Brussels.

Zelenskyy will join the leaders of the EU's 27 member countries.
