Pope Francis begins 'tying up loose ends' as health deteriorates

    What's the story

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Friday after a major health decline.

His condition deteriorated on Monday as his bronchitis developed into a "polymicrobial infection," leading to a "complex clinical picture." He will need additional hospital care this week, the Vatican's press office said.

Amid this health scare, he is rushing to resolve any outstanding matters ahead of the battle to succeed him, sources revealed to Politico.

    Legacy preservation

Pope Francis's progressive appointments amid health concerns

He has been working to cement his progressive legacy by appointing reformist allies to key positions within the church.

He recently made history by appointing Sister Raffaella Petrini as the first female Governor of Vatican.

He also extended the term of ally Italian cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as the dean of the College of Cardinals.

These moves are seen as signs that his successor may continue his reformist approach on issues like women's roles in the church and LGBT matters.

    Medical history

Pope Francis's health challenges and active papacy

Pope Francis has battled multiple health issues throughout his life.

He had part of one lung removed in his youth and has suffered from recurring bronchitis during winters.

In 2021, he underwent surgery for diverticulitis and has since been dependent on a wheelchair or cane due to knee ligament problems.

His current hospitalization is the fourth time since his election in 2013 that he has been admitted for medical treatment.

    Public address

Pope Francis expresses gratitude, welcomes visitors to Vatican

On Monday, from his hospital bed, Pope Francis thanked healthcare workers and welcomed artists and pilgrims visiting the holy city.

However, he regretted not being able to greet them personally due to his ongoing treatment.

The Holy See has also released a statement asking for prayers for the Pope, saying he is touched by the many messages of affection and closeness that he has been receiving in recent hours.
