Doug Emhoff, the husband of United States Vice President Kamala Harris, has admitted to having an extramarital affair during his first marriage.
The admission came in response to a report by the Daily Mail that accused him of having an affair with the family's nanny, who is also a teacher at his children's private school, and getting her pregnant.
"During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions," Emhoff told CNN.

According to CNN, President Joe Biden's vetting committee was aware of the relationship and the circumstances surrounding the affair four years ago, when Harris was going through the running mate selection process.
A source also told the news channel that Emhoff had disclosed the affair to Harris before their marriage, and that the affair ended years before Emhoff started dating the future VP.

"Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago," Emhoff's first wife, Kerstin, told CNN.
"He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala and I have built together."
Emhoff met Harris in 2013 when she was serving as California attorney general. They married a year later in 2014.
