    What's the story

United States Vice President Kamala Harris has officially accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination for the 2024 elections.

She is now formally competing against Republican candidate Donald Trump.

This development comes after President Joe Biden, at 81 years old, withdrew from the race last month.

If Harris wins, she will make history as the first woman to be elected US president.

    Commitment

Harris pledges to unite Americans in acceptance speech

Harris accepted her nomination during the Democratic National Convention held at Chicago's United Center.

"On behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender, or the language your grandmother speaks, on behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination for President of the United States of America," she said.

In her acceptance speech, she pledged to be a "president who unites" Americans and vowed to "fight for America's future."

    Political stance

    Harris criticizes Trump's approach

She emphasized the importance of unity, stating that this election presents an opportunity for the nation to move past previous divisions and chart a new path forward as Americans.

Harris criticized her Republican rival Trump, accusing him of planning to "pull our country back."

"This election is one of the most important in the life of our nation," Harris said.

    Gratitude

    Harris thanks Biden

The Democratic Presidential candidate added, "Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails. How he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States, not to improve your life, but to serve the only client he has ever had... himself."

She also expressed her gratitude toward Biden during her acceptance speech. "Joe, I am filled with gratitude. Your record is extraordinary as history will show. Your character is inspiring," she said.

    Strategic moves

Harris's statement on Ukraine, border security

During her acceptance speech, Harris also introduced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential pick.

She also addressed international relations, pledging support for Ukraine and NATO allies while criticizing Trump's approach to border control.

Harris promised to reinstate the border security bill that Trump had vetoed and reform America's immigration system.

    Conflict resolution

    Harris addresses Gaza conflict

Harris also discussed the ongoing conflict in Gaza during her acceptance speech.

She stated that she and President Biden were working tirelessly to secure a hostage release and ceasefire agreement.

Harris expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself while acknowledging the devastating suffering in Gaza.

She concluded her speech with a call to action for all Americans: "Let's fight for it. Let's vote for it."
