    Germany doubles funds to fight car pollution

    What's the story

    German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking alongside VC Sigmar Gabriel announced that the funding to help federal states and towns to combat vehicular pollution will be doubled to reach $1.2 billion.

    The government would also initiate dialogues with the automotive industry to see what measures they can take. Merkel said a significant contribution has been made by this sector without citing figures.

    The Chancellor said that all German towns that have emission levels higher than the norm will be able to apply for financial aid from the fund.

    The 28 German cities, against which Brussels has begun legal proceedings for elevated pollution, will also be eligible for this fund.

    This aid can be used to reinforce public transportation, promote electric cars and take various eco-friendly measures.
