'Nuclear submarines, jet engines...': France's big offer to India

    What's the story

The Emmanuel Macron government is prepared to discuss and support the construction of nuclear attack submarines, the complete transfer of technology for 110 kilo-Newton thrust aircraft engines, and fully capable underwater drones to India.

These are some of the subjects on the table for the India-France strategic conversation in Paris, which will take place between September 30 and October 1 between National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Macron's diplomatic advisor Emmanuel Bonne, the Hindustan Times reported.

    Expanding partnership

India-France collaboration extends to space and military technology

During the dialogue, Doval is also expected to meet with Macron and update him on India's efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

The strategic partnership between India and France has expanded into new areas such as space, with a letter of intent on military satellites signed by Doval and French Defence Minister Sebastian Lecornu during Macron's visit to India in January.

France's offer comes as the Indian Navy has expressed a need for two nuclear attack submarines for future operations.

    Technological support

France offers full spectrum autonomous systems to India

In addition to submarines, France has offered full spectrum autonomous systems in air, surface and underwater domains.

These are aimed at enhancing India's ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) capabilities and protecting Indian naval assets such as submarines.

The dialogue will also cover an offer from Safran Engines's Chairman Ross McInnes to jointly design, develop, certify and produce 110 KN engines for future Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project with 100% TOT including hot engine sections.

    Future collaboration

Safran's offer to India includes training and upgrades

Safran has also proposed to train Indians in advanced metallurgy and assist India in upgrading this fighter jet engine for newer versions of AMCA.

The jointly developed engine will be sovereign property of India, which it can export to third countries without any restrictions.

France has long been a trusted supplier of advanced weaponry to India, with their partnership being central to India's strategic autonomy.

    Ongoing negotiations

India-France negotiations for Rafale-Maritime fighters underway

Currently, India and France are negotiating for the Indian Navy to acquire 26 Rafale-Maritime fighters for India's two aircraft carriers.

The French Naval Group will also jointly build three more latest Kalvari class diesel attack submarines under Project 75.

The Indian Air Force is looking toward France for more Rafale fighters to increase its depleting fighter squadron strength.
