    What's the story

India captain Rohit Sharma will reportedly discuss his ODI future with chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, PTI reports.

As Rohit leads India in the final against New Zealand today, speculation about his future grows.

The 37-year-old has had an illustrious ODI career, featuring in 272 matches since his 2007 debut and amassing 11,092 runs at an average of 48.64.

    Captaincy record

Rohit has led India in 55 ODIs

Rohit has captained India in 55 ODIs, recording 41 wins, 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result.

According to ESPNcricinfo, he boasts a 74.54% win percentage.

Rohit has also scored 2,430 runs at 51.70, with five centuries and 16 fifties as skipper.

His leadership blends strategic aggression with a knack for inspiring young players.

Notaly, he guided India to T20 World Cup glory last year and announced his retirement from T20Is soon after.

    Gill's perspective

Shubman Gill comments on Rohit's future

When asked about discussions surrounding Rohit's future, vice-captain Shubman Gill said, "Till now, we have only been discussing winning the match, winning the Champions Trophy. He has not spoken to me or to the team about this decision (retirement). I don't think Rohit is thinking about it."

This comes as speculation mounts if Rohit will continue as captain after the Champions Trophy.

    Future discussions

The BCCI is keen on having a stable captain

The BCCI wants a stable captain to plan for the next two years, per the Times of India.

Tough talks about Rohit's ODI and Test captaincy may follow.

Notably, the board has also reportedly delayed announcing new central contracts until after the final against New Zealand.

    Leadership transition

Shubman Gill is seen as the future leader

Gill, India's ODI vice-captain, is seen as a future leader.

At just 24, he has already been given the vice-captaincy.

Although Gill has limited international captaincy experience, he has led the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

With two years of leadership ahead of the 2027 World Cup, he could be well-prepared to take charge by then.
