Sevilla threaten to pull out of Spanish Super Cup tie

    What's the story

12-time Spanish Super Cup holders Barcelona are set to take on Sevilla in this year's Cup tie, slated to be held in Tangier, Morocco.

However, Sevilla have threatened to pull out of the clash if the Catalan giants field more than 3 non-European Union players in the match.

Here is what prompted Sevilla to make this decision.

    Twitter Post

Sevilla surprised by Spanish Football Federation's decision

Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF's statement 24 hours before the Super Cup. It has stated that as many non-EU players as desired can be registered, despite the fact that in their last notice for the 18/19 season, only three were due to be permitted, without exception.

    Rationale

Sevilla's legal department studying the matter

This reaction comes after the Spanish football federation stated that there would be no restriction on non-EU players for the Super Cup.

Notably, only three players were allowed in squads for league matches.

Sevilla said that their legal department is studying the matter.

Barca's new signings Vidal, Arthur and Malcolm are set to feature in the game.

Marlon is in the squad as well.

    European Union

Barca's other non-EU players have acquired citizenship

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who are from South American countries, have EU citizenship.

Also Brazilian Philippe Coutinho is said to have acquired a Portuguese passport through his wife as per reports in Spain.

Barca, therefore, could easily field only three non-EU players rather than risking the match.

It remains to be seen what's their final squad for the game.
