Nathan McSweeney admits naivety facing Jasprit Bumrah in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

    What's the story

Australian cricketer Nathan McSweeney has candidly admitted his naivety in taking on India's ace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Despite being confident, he was no match for Bumrah's brilliance and unerring accuracy.

"Yeah, tough work is probably an understatement. He's an incredible bowler," said McSweeney on the Willow Talk Podcast.

    Here's more.

    Impact

Bumrah's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Bumrah was pivotal in India's performance on their tour of Australia, picking 32 wickets in five matches.

He also led India to victory in the first Test at Perth, and finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series.

McSweeney batted against Bumrah five times in the series and was dismissed by him four times, eventually losing his place after the third Test due to his inability to cope with Bumrah's bowling prowess.

    Insights

    McSweeney's reflections on facing Bumrah

Reflecting on his experience, McSweeney admitted he was unprepared for the challenge posed by Bumrah.

He said, "I was probably naive going into it, never faced him before and (thinking) he'll be fine."

The Australian opener lauded Bumrah's skill and relentless bowling precision.

But he's an incredible bowler that has a great skill but just relentless ability to pitch the ball in the area where you don't want as a batter," McSweeney added.

    Recovery

    Bumrah's injury and future prospects

Bumrah has been sidelined since suffering a back injury in the final Test against Australia.

He missed the entire Champions Trophy 2025 but is set to return in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, he may miss Mumbai Indians' first few matches as he continues his recovery.
