Morne Morkel lauds Mohammed Shami's return to Indian team

    What's the story

India's bowling coach Morne Morkel expressed his delight at veteran pacer Mohammed Shami's return to the national team.

Shami made his first appearance for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup final during the third T20I match against England on Tuesday in Rajkot.

Although he didn't take any wickets in the match, he showed his trademark seam position and maintained an economy of 8.33 in three overs.

However, he was left out for the fourth T20I.

    Possible return

Morkel hints at Shami's inclusion in upcoming match

In the post-match press conference after the fourth game, Morkel hinted at Shami's inclusion in the next match.

"Shami's been bowling really well, catching to him at warm-ups... so very happy he's coming along. He's probably going to get an opportunity in the next game, we'll see how things go, but excited to have him back in the group," said Morkel.

    Mentorship role

Shami's experience a 'massive boost' for young bowlers

Morkel emphasized Shami's crucial role as a mentor for the younger bowlers in the squad.

He described the veteran pacer's experience and insights during training as a "massive boost" for the young bowling unit and Indian cricket.

Morkel added, "Just for him to share his experience and his knowledge at training is a massive boost for this young bowling unit and for Indian cricket, so yeah, great to have Shami back in the mix."

    Strategic advantage

Shami's return could strengthen India's bowling attack

Shami's return could give India an edge in the evenly poised series.

Meanwhile, his experience and skillset are likely to bolster India's pace department and mentor the young bowlers.

This comes after Harshit Rana and Ravi Bishnoi's three-wicket hauls helped India clinch a thrilling 15-run win over England in the fourth T20I match at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday.

    Series update

India secures series lead ahead of final match

India have now sealed the five-match series, courtesy a brilliant bowling effort in the second innings of the fourth T20I.

Meanwhile, the final match of the series will be played at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium on February 02.

Earlier in the first inning, despite a rocky start, Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube's efforts helped India set a target of 182 runs for England on Friday.
